Treat Young Dental Patients Like Gold: They are the Future of Your Practice
You may prefer working on their parents, but always remember that children are the future of your dental practice. Annoying as they may be, treat the kids who come into your office like gold, because one day they will be!
Children, even very young children, know when they are truly respected. Answer kids' questions encourage them to ask more, because they undoubtedly have more questions that need answering. Even when they don't ask, make a point of engaging kids in conversations about their teeth in order to determine if they have potential dental problems and to teach them how to take care of their teeth properly.
Be certain to explain why you are advising them to do certain things, such as brush at least twice a day. Having visual aids to explain things like how plaque develops and what it does can be most helpful, especially if you can provide some materials such as coloring books that show correct brushing procedure they can take home with them.
Educating children has more than just one benefit: Their parents will appreciate you more, the children will grow up with healthier teeth and better dental hygiene habits than they would otherwise have had, and they're more likely to remain your patients when they're grown!
